Louis Laurent Rose d’Anjou 2010

The French sure know how to make some really nice Rosés. This one is no exception! A lot of people approach Rosé with the common misconception that because it’s pink, it must be sweet. Oh but on the contrary! Rosés are more often than not dry. This Rosé D’Anjou is a drier style with just the right amount of fruit to make this wine clean, crisp and refreshing. A great wine for sipping on those hot summer days! And if I could just mention, the beautiful color pulled from the skin of the grapes really depicts the true meaning of Rosé.

Dry Creek Vineyards – Dry Chenin Blanc 2009

Chenin Blanc is by far one of my most loved grapes, however, I feel as though a large percent of the population still have yet to know what this grape is. Originating from the Loire Valley region of France and more commonly known as Vouvray, Chenin Blanc has been grown in the states for decades. Dry Creek Vineyards has mastered the art of growing this grape but has taken a different approach to it. They’ve created a drier style juice that has a little less body and is not as sweet as Vouvray. Leaning slightly towards the profile of its cousin, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin is crisp and refreshing. The nose lends aromas of orange blossoms and lemon zest leading into a palate of juicy peaches, tropical fruits and citrus, with a finish that leaves you wanting more! Don’t be afraid to step out of your boundaries and try something new! Spring has sprung! Enjoy!

J Vineyards Pinot Gris 2009

It’s back! One of my all time favorites has returned to us with a brand new face, new vintage and a brand new price! However, there is one thing that did remain the same: its deliciousness! With a fresh, clean crispness, a hint of tangy lime and sweet honey. The round, juicy fruit balances out the acid to make this the perfect summer sipper! It goes great with spicy Thai or Asian food, fresh cut tropical fruit salad or just as good all by itself. This will be a “must have” in my wine rack at home!

2009 Banfi San Angelo Pinot Grigio

Nothing but the best from our good friends at Banfi Winery. We have a vast selection of their wines and not one of them has been less than fantastic! I personally, am usually partial to red wine during these cold winter months, however, I have found the San Angelo to be quite pleasurable and satisfying. It’s crisp, refreshing fruits border on tropical and has a fullness you don’t always find in Italian Pinot Grigios. In comparison to some of its higher priced competitors, Banfi wins hands down with San Angelo! Not only is it less expensive but, in my opinion, it has a whole lot more to offer! The next time you want to treat yourself to something nice, I highly suggest this favorite of mine.

Tait – The Ball Buster 2008

I am aware that my fellow wine manager Bill Martin has also chosen this wine as his February pick, however, let’s just call this me backing him up! When I tasted this wine, there was no other choice for me! Sometimes it’s difficult to find the wine with that “Wow” factor, but this one has it! A blend of predominately Shiraz (77%) Merlot (12%) and Cabernet (11%) make it big, thick, and juicy with spice all over the tongue. The concentration of fruit and the creaminess from barrel aging carries the high level of alcohol flawlessly. At an amazing price, this wine won’t last long! I’ve got it stacked right up front just waiting for you to come and get it!

Terra d’oro Zinfandel 2007

We’ve struck gold! The words Terra d’oro, do in fact, mean` The Land of Gold ’. The description on the bottle says it all “ Beauty, Power and Grace”. 100 year old vines give this wine a deep concentration of fruit and a full rack of intense spices! The extra time the grapes spend with their skins give the juice a rich, dark color and the flavors of ripe plums and dark berries give the palate exactly what a Zin lover wants! This is definitely one for the wine rack this year! Get it while it lasts!

Bodegas Tarima Monastrel – Jumilla, Spain 2009

Produced by 25-35 year old vines, this wine packs a lot of punch for not a lot of money. If the beautiful Passion Flower on the label doesn’t lure you in, the hints of licorice, chocolate and floral notes on the nose will. Full of luscious, dark fruit with a powerful yet, non-invasive grip on the palate will please anyone that enjoys a heavier style wine. Can be held for up to 3 years or can be drank today. Enjoy with grilled meats, simple cheese and crackers or just sip all by itself!

Raymond – R Collection Lot No. 7 Field Blend 2008

As you’ve probably guessed, I love red blends!! Especially ones that are full of body and rich, delicious fruit! This particular blend consists of 7 different varietals, however, the top 5 grapes are what really make the wine : Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. The blending of grapes allow for a well balanced wine which provide the best characters of all those involved. From the Syrah, spice and ripe fruit on the nose, to the tart, tangy raspberries, cherries and plump juicy blueberries from the Merlot, body and tannin from the Cab and Petite Sirah, finished up with some crushed white pepper from the Zin……who can ask for anything more? A great wine at a great price! Look for it in the California Red Blend section!

Cline Cashmere 2008

A delicious blend of 3 perfectly paired together grapes, Mourvedre, Grenache and Syrah. The texture is described fittingly with the name, cashmere! Aromas of dark fruit and a bit of fresh cracked pepper spark the initial interest. The black cherry, raspberry and rich chocolate flavors really come out on the palate as the wine glides over the tongue with a smooth, silky texture. A skillfully put together wine is the best way to describe the finished product. I would highly recommend this bottle to anyone who loves lush, flavorful wine as much as I do!

Aveleda Follies Touriga Nacional 2005

Touriga Nacional is the national grape of Portugal and is one that I have come to enjoy. Love at first pour when you see the gorgeous, deep ruby color fill the glass. With aromas of dried plum, spice and chocolate, the smell alone pulls you right in! The rich, smooth texture coats your mouth with delicious flavors of fig and vanilla. The super soft tannin at the end ties it all in to place to finish the already perfectly blended wine. Smooth enough to drink alone but rich enough to pair with a hearty beef dish. Drink and enjoy - Salute!
August 2010
La Posta Cocina Blend

Delicious combination of predominately Malbec, blended with 20% Bonarda which adds a little depth and rustic character along with 20% Syrah to smooth it out with juicy plums and black pepper. The wine coats your mouth so abundantly and ends with enough soft tannins to finish it off perfectly. Excellent paired with a juicy cut of nice, rare beef!

Bianchi "Zen" Zin 2006

From the Zen Ranch in Paso Robles comes this Heritage Selection Zinfandel. True and traditional to its varietal, this is my kind of Zin! The ripe, concentrated fruit gives the wine intense flavors with all the spice it needs to make it a beautiful Zinfandel. Hints of raisin and cinnamon on the nose with a jammy, robust body that coats your mouth and gives you that “Zen“ moment. Brand new to our selection and for under $20, goes great with a juicy steak or all by itself. Grab a bottle, light the grill and relax!

Rocca Sveva Soave 2008

Featured in our June Newsletter at an incredible price, this is a wonderful addition to our Italian selection! Starting with beautiful aromas of fresh, spring blossoms and fruits leading into a palate of full flavors that coat the tongue. A bit of an herbal note perfectly balanced with acidity, finishes clean with a hint of almond. Perfect summertime wine to pair with any seafood, salad, or light meat.

Cousino-Macul Sauvignon Gris 2008

My pick of the month this time around is one that seems to have been lost in the midst of all the other varietals out there. First of all, Sauvignon Gris is NOT A BLEND! It is a rare, distinct white grape variety originally grown in the Bordeaux region then reproduced in the 19th Century in Chile. Although, pale yellow in color, it has a rich, fleshy texture like that of a peach. Medium body with citrusy fruit but not quite as acidic as a Sauvignon Blanc. Tropical mandarins and hints of spice and ginger, make this wine very unique and should be tried at least once! Be bold, be brave, try something out of the ordinary!!

Undone Pinot Noir 2007

Brand new on the shelf here at Luke’s in Yarmouth! From the first glance of the seductive label portraying a woman’s corset being “undone”, I knew this wine would be interesting. When you pour it, the first thing you’ll notice is its pale, almost transparent color, giving you the impression that it may be lacking in flavor as well. This is not true! At first, on the nose, you’ll get the aromas of bright red strawberries, raspberries and a little rose petal which carries through onto the palate with a touch of spice and soft tannins. This wine is fun, refreshing and what I consider to be, a great spring/summertime wine! At an amazing value price for a German Pinot Noir, it’s a choice that can’t be beat!

90 + Cellars Lot 15 Carneros Pinot Noir 2008

Brand new to our "Lot Selections"! A beautiful display of quality and elegance without the " it must be good " price tag. Sourced from several vineyards, mostly Napa Valley and produced in a highly rated winery. Dark, black cherry and black berry floods the tongue with a zesty spice on it's back. The combination delivers a soft, juicy, vibrant red wine that would hold true to any 90+ rating!
February 2010
Valcanto Monastrell 2007

A+ by my palate! Made from 100% Monastrell or Mourvedre, as it’s also called. This wine is medium bodied with a rich, deep color and a great concentration of fruit. There is no shortage of delicious blueberry and blackberry on the nose or on the tongue. Smooth character and a long finish make this an all around, tastefully done, good for everyday drinking, wine!

Ramon Bilbao Crianza 2005

Created from, what Spain refers to as, it’s “Noble Grape” – Tempranillo which is the prominent grape of the Rioja region. Typically meant to be drunk young to provide that up front, ripe fruit. Its beautiful, ruby red color is intriguing from first pour. Aromas of dark cherry and vanilla with flavors of slightly smoked tobacco bring complexity to the palate. Medium body with a gentle spice on the finish make this a perfect match for light cheeses and a variety of meats. It’s a winner in my book! Great wine to start the New Year off right!

Sterling Vintner's Collection Meritage

How much would you pay for an incredible blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot? Sounds expensive, huh? Well, guess what? Under $10 a bottle is all we’re asking for! I know, I know, I didn’t believe it either until I tried it myself. This tasty little jewel comes to us from the Central Coast appellations of California where the nights are cool and the days are warm and sunny producing a wine that is packed with the jammy goodness of blackberries, black cherries and rich, dark chocolate. A little spice on the finish takes it to a whole new level! Guaranteed to warm you up from the inside out during those cold winter nights!

Acrobat Pinot Gris 2008

Oh Oregon, you’ve done it again! Hailing from the well known, King Estates Winery in Western Oregon is this young, fresh, mouth-watering pinot gris. Holding all the qualities I look for in this particular varietal at a very modest price! Starting with an aromatic apple cinnamon and zesty citrus nose. The body provides flavors of peaches, pineapples, lemons and limes, all of those lush tropical fruits we know and love! A perfect balance of acidity and residual sugar leave your mouth feeling clean, invigorated and wanting more! Good for any occasion and very food friendly.

Martin Ray Santa Barbara Pinot Noir 2007

This wine is drinking very nicely right now! It’s Burgundian in style, no fruit bombs here! Soft, elegant tannins rise to the occasion. With ripe raspberry and fresh strawberry complemented by a touch of oak giving the body a creamy deliciousness that I, for one, just love! This bottle is a new item in my collection and has made its way to the top of my list! Drink and be merry!

Abundance Vineyards – Abundantly Rich Red

The name says it all! This estate grown wine comes from the Lodi region of California and is a blend of 50% Carignane and 50% Old Vine Zinfandel. Packed with rich, dark fruit aromas like cherries, blackberries and plums. Throw in a little chocolate and the use of toasty oak barrels and you’ve got yourself a smashing hit! The feel is soft and full with a long, ripe finish. Slightly sweet but not sugary. Highly recommended!
August 2009
Valley of the Moon Pinot Blanc

This wine is, for me, the perfect summer sipper! Not to be confused with a Pinot Grigio! It is filled with delicious, pronounced fruit and delightful floral aromas on the nose. Has a clean, crisp finish that is most refreshing. Put a nice chill on the bottle and serve it up with some light fare or just drink it on it’s own. Guaranteed to please!
July 2009
The Innocent Viognier

This wine from the Mildura region of Victoria, Australia is alluring from the flowing dress of the woman on the label, but once you open the bottle you learn quickly that there is nothing innocent about it. This is Viognier is created the way wine should be. The alluring hints of orange, apple and honey to the smooth and lush of the sweetness throughout the finish. Try this wine as an alternative to the new Zealand Sauvignon Blancs. Perfect for any gathering. Look for the whole line up, created by a judge; The Guilty, the Verdict… you get my point enjoy!
June 2009
Barrel 27 "Right Hand Man" Syrah 2006

This beautifully put together California Syrah is by far one of the best values I’ve come across in a while. I immediately fell in love with its deep, dark color and the rich, smooth texture. Flavorful blackberry with hints of mocha and spice finish with soft, elegant tannins. Would go fabulously with grilled meats & cheeses or in a nice big glass all by itself! You’d be hard pressed to find a California Syrah this good with such little damage to your pocket!
May 2009
Sauvion Vouvray 2007

In this bottle I have found what, I think, a Vouvray should taste like. The juice is made from 100% Chenin Blanc and is quite charming. This wine has a lighter body style, is aromatic of fresh tropical fruits with a medium dry finish. Refreshing, ripe melon and crisp green apple fill your mouth and make it smile! Drink a bottle now or hold it for another year, either way, for just $12.99 you can’t go wrong!

Rated 88 points from the Wine Spectator and I would easily agree. This wine is a must try!!

Erath Pinot Noir 2007

A classic Oregon Pinot Noir providing a light body, without lacking character. Shows bright fruit aromas of ripe strawberry, raspberry and dark cherry. A smooth silky texture with slightly smoked earth tones and finely tuned tannins perfectly blend together for a simply delightful bottle! One of the best I've had for under $20! Just twist, pour and enjoy!
